Description

Picot Foot 1/8" (Shell Edge Foot) for Singer Slant Needle (Slant Shank) Machines

This specialty picot foot is designed for Singer slant needle sewing machines, featuring durable all-metal hinged construction. Create delicate, decorative hem finishes with tiny scallops or small points along fabric edges—commonly known as picot edge or shell edge. Perfect for elegant finishing touches on lightweight, delicate fabrics.

Key Features:

  • All-metal hinged construction for long-lasting durability
  • Creates 1/8" narrow rolled hem with decorative picot/shell edge
  • Unique channel on underside gently rolls fabric edge
  • Works with wide zigzag or picot/shell edge stitch settings
  • Self-finished decorative edge without manual folding or hand-stitching
  • Compatible with Singer slant needle (slant shank) machines

Perfect For:

  • Lingerie and Silk: Delicate items like silk scarves, lingerie, and sheer blouses
  • Heirloom Sewing: Classic shell edge finish on heirloom baby clothes and christening gowns
  • Ruffles and Edges: Finishing edges of ruffles and decorative trims on garments and home décor
  • Decorative Alternative: Elegant alternative to traditional narrow rolled hem

How the Picot Edge Works:

The picot foot features a unique channel or groove on the underside, similar to a narrow hemmer foot, which gently rolls the raw edge of fabric into a tiny 1/8-inch hem. The foot works in conjunction with a wide zigzag stitch or specific picot/shell edge stitch setting. The left swing of the needle stitches into the fabric's rolled edge, while the right swing goes just off the folded edge, tacking down the rolled edge with a slightly tighter stitch. This combination creates the tension needed to pull the fabric edge into characteristic small scallops or points (picots), resulting in a delicate, elegant, self-finished decorative edge.

Using the Foot:

  1. Fabric Preparation: Works best on lightweight, relatively stable fabrics (silk, batiste, fine cotton, sheer fabrics)
  2. Stitch Setting: Set machine to wide zigzag stitch or picot/shell edge stitch if available
  3. Guide and Roll: Feed fabric edge through the channel on underside of foot, which rolls the edge into a tiny 1/8" hem
  4. Sew: The zigzag stitch creates tension by stitching into and off the edge, forming delicate scallops
  5. Test First: Always test on scrap fabric to adjust stitch width and length for desired scallop size

Stitch Settings for Best Results:

  • Wide Zigzag: Set to widest width, medium length (typically 3.0-4.0 width, 1.5-2.0 length)
  • Picot/Shell Edge Stitch: Use if your machine has this decorative stitch option
  • Tension: May need to slightly increase tension for more pronounced scallops
  • Speed: Sew slowly for better control and more consistent scallops

Tips for Best Results:

  • Use lightweight, stable fabrics for most pronounced scallop effect
  • Test stitch settings on scrap fabric before starting project
  • Sew slowly and guide fabric gently through channel
  • Adjust zigzag width to control scallop size
  • All-metal construction ensures consistent edge rolling
  • Creates professional heirloom-quality finish without hand-stitching
