Singer Model 306 - Advanced Zigzag & Decorative Stitching

Find vintage genuine and quality aftermarket replacement parts for the Singer Model 306, introduced in 1954 as the successor to the Singer 206. This advanced zigzag machine added decorative stitch capabilities through pattern discs and improved features like drop feed dogs for free-motion embroidery.

History of the Singer Model 306

Introduced in 1954 as an upgrade to the Model 206, the 306 expanded zigzag capabilities with decorative stitching options and improved functionality. Production continued until around 1961-1962 across multiple Singer factories worldwide.

  • Production Period: 1954-1961/1962
  • Manufacturing Sites: 306K (Kilbowie, Scotland), 306W (Bridgeport, Connecticut), 306M (Monza, Italy)
  • Sister Model: Singer 319K (introduced 1956) shared many features with the 306K
  • Successor to: Singer Model 206

Why the Model 306 Was Advanced

  • Decorative Stitching - Pattern discs (fashion cams) create decorative stitch patterns beyond basic zigzag
  • Drop Feed Dogs - Can be disengaged for free-motion embroidery and darning (improvement over 206)
  • Full Reverse Feed - Complete reverse capability for secure seam finishing
  • Lighter Weight - Cast aluminum body instead of cast iron (easier to move and store)
  • Versatile Stitching - Zigzag, decorative patterns, and straight stitch in one machine

Critical: Special Needle Requirement

⚠️ IMPORTANT: The Singer 306 requires special 206x13 needles with shorter points. Using standard 15x1 needles can damage your machine. Always use 206x13 needles specifically designed for this model. This is one of the most important things to know about maintaining your 306.

Unique Bobbin System

  • Large-Capacity Bobbins - Uses type 55623 bobbins (not standard Class 66)
  • Vertical Mount - Bobbin case mounts vertically, accessed by tilting machine backward
  • Tilt-Back Design - Base includes latch to hold machine in tilted position for easier bobbin access
  • Professional Capacity - Larger bobbins mean less frequent thread changes

Pattern Disc System

  • Early Models: Used plastic cams (fashion discs) for decorative stitch patterns
  • Later Models (306K22, 306K23): Did not require cams - built-in pattern capability
  • Expanded Creativity: Interchangeable discs allowed for various decorative effects

Finish Options

  • Standard Finishes: Black or tan body colors
  • Rare Variants: Some models featured distinctive tan crinkle finish (highly collectible)

Maintenance & Care

The Model 306's tilt-back bobbin access system requires familiarity with the latch mechanism. Always ensure the machine is properly latched when tilted for bobbin changes. The vertical bobbin case must be properly seated for correct tension. The drop feed dog mechanism should be cleaned regularly to ensure smooth operation. Pattern discs (on early models) should be properly seated for correct stitch formation.

Most importantly: always use 206x13 needles - using standard 15x1 needles can cause serious damage to the swing needle mechanism.

Collector Notes

The Model 306 has a mixed reputation among collectors. Some appreciate its versatility with decorative stitching and drop feed capability, while others find it finicky due to the special needle and bobbin requirements. The rare tan crinkle finish models are particularly sought after. The 306's cast aluminum body makes it lighter and more portable than its cast iron predecessor, the 206.
