Description
This is the original Singer split toe gathering foot — Part #161659, also known as a shirring foot. An all-metal, screw-on low shank attachment designed to create soft, even gathers in lightweight fabrics. Vintage genuine SIMANCO, excellent condition.
Dual Capability
- Single layer gathering: Gather a single piece of fabric by sewing across it — stitch length and upper thread tension control the fullness of the gather.
- Simultaneous gather and attach: The split toe features a narrow horizontal slot. Slide a flat piece of fabric into the slot while placing the fabric to be gathered underneath. In a single pass, the machine gathers the bottom layer and attaches it to the flat top layer.
Installation
This is a screw-on foot. Remove your standard presser foot and its holder/ankle entirely to mount this directly onto the presser bar.
Best Results
- Fabric: Best suited for lightweight, soft materials — batiste, silk, chiffon, fine cotton
- Fuller gathers: Use a longer stitch length and higher upper thread tension
