Sewing Machine Presser Feet and Attachments

Understanding Sewing Machine Shanks and Presser Feet:

  1. Shank Types:

    • Low Shank: Most domestic sewing machines fall into this category. If you’re unsure, chances are your machine is low shank. To verify, measure from the bed of your sewing machine to the center of the thumb screw (presser foot holder screw). If it’s around half an inch, you have a low shank machine.
    • High Shank: These machines are generally more sophisticated, often embroidery models or industrial machines. Measure 1 inch or longer from the bottom of the presser foot to the center of the screw to confirm a high shank machine.
    • Super High Shank: Less common, these are found in specialized industrial machines and several of the Kenmore models. Measure 1 1/4 inch from the bottom of the presser foot to the center of the screw to confirm a high shank machine.
    • Slant Needle: Singer was the sole producer of slant needle machines. The slant needle allowed for better visibility while sewing and reduced eye strain.
    • Other Brands’ Systems: Some brands (like Bernina) have their unique presser foot systems.

           2. Presser Feet Types:

    • Snap-On Presser Feet: These attach easily without screws. Most modern machines use snap-on feet.
    • Screw-On Presser Feet: These require a screw to secure them. Vintage machines often use screw-on feet.
