How the Double Gathering Function Works:
The foot utilizes mechanical tension differences through its smart design. For single layer gathering, fabric is placed entirely under the foot—the foot's design restricts the top layer's movement slightly, causing the lower layer to bunch up. The real advantage is the dual function: slide the flat (ungathered) fabric into the open slot/channel on the top left side of the foot, then place the fabric to be gathered underneath, right side up, aligned with the flat fabric. As you sew a straight stitch, the feed dogs move the bottom layer at a standard rate while the top layer (in the slot) is held firm, resulting in the bottom layer automatically gathering and both layers being stitched together simultaneously in one pass.
Using the Foot:
- For Single Layer Gathering: Place fabric entirely under foot and sew. The foot's design causes fabric to gather automatically
- For Gathering and Attaching (Double Function): Slide flat fabric into open slot on top left side of foot. Place fabric to be gathered underneath, right side up, aligned with flat fabric. Sew—bottom layer gathers while being stitched to flat top layer in one pass
- Adjust Fullness: Longer stitch length and higher upper thread tension create tighter, fuller gathers. Test on scrap fabric first
- Align Carefully: Ensure both fabric layers are properly aligned before starting to sew
Adjusting Gather Fullness:
- Stitch Length: Longer stitch length (3.5-4.5) creates fuller, tighter gathers
- Upper Thread Tension: Increase tension for more pronounced gathering effect
- Test First: Always test on scrap fabric to determine gathering ratio before starting project
