Restoring the Elna Grasshopper Model 50: Replacement Parts Guide

Restoring the Elna Grasshopper Model 50: Replacement Parts Guide

Chris Ashmore |

As a vintage sewing machine enthusiast and collector, I recently purchased an Elna Grasshopper Model 50 sewing machine to research common replacement parts. Built in the 1950s, this Swiss-made beauty is a straight-stitch marvel, known for its portability and innovative design. However, finding compatible parts for these machines can be a challenge, especially since many are missing key components or have worn-out parts. After extensive testing, I’ve identified several replacement parts that fit the Elna Model 50 perfectly, ensuring it runs smoothly for your sewing projects. In this guide, I’ll share my findings, complete with photos, and link to our new Elna Model 50 #1 Grasshopper Sewing Machine Parts collection where you can find these parts.

  • Power Cord (Part #50346N) - A Perfect Fit for the Model 50

One of the most common issues with the Elna Grasshopper Model 50 is a missing or damaged power cord, especially the Bakelite female end, which often breaks due to age. I found that the power cord (Part #50346N), originally designed for the Elna 722010 models, fits the Model 50 perfectly. You can find this power cord in our Elna Grasshopper Parts Collection.

  • Motor Belt (Part #820-10) - A Reliable 10-Inch Stretch Belt

The motor belt on my Model 50 was worn out, a common issue for machines from the 1950s. I tested a 10-inch stretch belt (Part #820-10), and it works flawlessly, providing the right tension for smooth operation.  Motor belt installed on the Elna Model 50, showing placement] This belt ensures your machine’s motor runs efficiently, making it a must-have replacement part. Check it out in our Elna Grasshopper Parts Collection.

  • Needle and Bobbin - Standard Parts for Easy Replacement.

The Elna Model 50 uses a standard 15x1 needle, which is widely available and easy to source. I recommend using a high-quality Class 15 metal bobbin for the top drop-in bobbin system, as it ensures consistent stitching and durability. • Light Bulb (2PCW-LED) - A Modern Upgrade with Less Heat

The original light bulb on the Model 50 was often missing or outdated. I replaced it with a 2PCW-LED bulb, which is slightly shorter than the original but fits perfectly and works well. This LED bulb generates significantly less heat, making it safer and more energy efficient. 2PCW-LED light bulb installed in the Elna Model 50, showing the fit and illumination] This modern upgrade improves visibility while sewing, enhancing your overall experience. Restoring my Elna Grasshopper Model 50 has been a rewarding journey, and these replacement parts have brought it back to life.
